Bigboyroy Wins To Score Queensland Trip

Consistent gelding Bigboyroy has booked a spot on Chris Waller’s Magic Millions carnival team with a typically gritty performance to salute at Randwick.

A winner at Kembla Grange two starts ago before a luckless third to the in-form Edison earlier this month, Bigboyroy ($4.20) found clear running in Saturday’s Drinkwise Mile (1600m) to wear down frontrunner Frosty Rocks ($4 fav) by a half-neck.

Waller confirmed the victory had booked Bigboyroy’s passage to the Gold Coast for an 1800m race on the lucrative Magic Millions program.

“The plan is to go to the Gold Coast in three weeks today,” Waller said.

“There is an 1800 metre race, which will be testing his stamina, but on the back of a tough Randwick mile I think he’ll be ready to go and one to follow again.”

Bigboyroy has won four of his 20 starts and while he is not the most talented horse in Waller’s stable, he has provided plenty of enjoyment for his owners.

“The owners love him, that’s what keeps owners in the business I guess, and punters, just good honest performers,” Waller said.

“They don’t have to be superstars but you can earn a lot of good prize money with horses like him.”

Waller also produced The Elanora to win the Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday and said the emerging three-year-old would be given a short break and aimed at the Sydney autumn carnival.

He is likely to tackle the Randwick Guineas second up with the Australian Derby his major goal.

Waller reported the stable could find nothing amiss with Shaquero after his disappointing performance as favourite in the B J McLachlan Stakes won by Alpine Edge.

He said the colt would not proceed directly to the $2 million Magic Millions Classic off Saturday’s effort but he may give him a chance to put his Queensland campaign back on track by running him again a week before the Gold Coast showpiece.
