Big Orange on track for Goodwood/Melbourne Cup double

Big Orange

JAMES McDonald has secured his biggest offshore riding win when Big Orange scored an all-the-way win in the Group 2 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket overnight.

McDonald is on an extended contract in England due to the suspension of fellow Godolphin rider William Buick and his win aboard Big Orange was his highlight this summer.

Big Orange finished fifth in the 2015 Melbourne Cup and is still a $41 chance at Sportsbet.com.au to win at Flemington later this year.

“He was pretty happy out there and he gave me a beautiful ride,” McDonald said. “He’s an absolute gentleman and a pleasure to ride.

“He wasn’t the best to begin in the stalls as he’s so big, but he was a gentleman on the course and that’s where it matters.”

The Michael Bell-trained runner was an exclusion from the Ascot Gold Cup at Royal Ascot last month because of the soft track conditions, but it will now head to the Goodwood Cup on July 29 to defeat its title.

“He’ll just keep going. We know he gets two miles. He wasn’t going to stop,” Bell said.

“He’s the most charming horse to train and I’m pleased for James McDonald as he’s a lovely guy.”
