Big future touted for dominant Randwick winner Goodfella

Goodfella was ultra-impressive at Randwick on Saturday.

TRAINER Bjorn Baker believes his ever-improving three-year-old Goodfella is capable of replicating the winning form in all areas of the country after the colt took out the opening race on the Randwick card.

Sitting wide for much of the race, the Snitzel colt hit the front at the 200m mark and was never headed, finishing strongly to the line to return $10.10 at William Hill.

Our Mantra ($2 at Crownbet) finished off well but never looked capable of bridging the gap while Sparky Lad’s late firm on track proved costly for punters as the horse could only manage third to deliver a dividend of $1.70 to Ladbrokes customers.

Highly-regarded Godolphin colt Regent had every possible chance to come down the outside and deliver a strong finish but was unable to find its way into the first four.

Bjorn Baker, who had a basketball mishap at home attempting to slam dunk in the backyard, was happy that his horse could put a smile back on his face.

“I did the dunk too and we’ve got another one now too,” the trainer joked.

In an oddly run race heading into the straight, the trainer was full of praise for jockey Jason Collett’s performance aboard Goodfella.

“He’s a good horse, he just does a lot wrong,” Baker said.

“I thought Jason rode him well, he didn’t panic. It was a big effort sitting three deep outside the lead … it was a very game effort and a great ride from Jason who’s riding very well for me at the moment.”

Baker believes there could be a trip to Victoria in the future for the colt, but admitted a certain three-year-old’s race on the Gold Coast is one they have had earmarked for awhile.

“He’s back in the game, he’s got a lot options,” the trainer explained.

“We’ve got the Magic Millions three-year-old race and we may even look at taking him down to Melbourne for a race.”
