Big bookmaker bets and market movers for Saturday, May 21

The punters love betting on big days of racing and with four metropolitan meetings on Saturday, the big punters have come out to play.

Both Doomben and Morphettville have group one’s on the card with the Group 1 Doomben Cup and the Group 1 Goodwood Handicap in Adelaide. There has been steady action for both major races and Sportsbet.com.au has taken one of the bigger bets in the Doomben Cup.

New Zealand invader Volkstok’n’barrell has been around the $5 mark all week, but once it drifted out to $6, one punter jumped on board with a $4000 bet. There have been other big bets on the Logan/Gibbs-trained runner to win, but the John O’Shea-trained Hauraki continues to shorten into $3.20 and will likely run as the favourite.

Sportsbet has also taken a large bet of $5000 at $2 on the Chris Waller-trained Hipparchus which is shooting for three consecutive wins. Its win price has dropped to $1.90 and the only other money has come for stablemate Dance Of Heroes which is $4.80 into $3.80.

Under The Louvre has been the best-backed runner in the Goodwood Handicap at each way odds. The Robert Smerdon-trained runner is due a major win and punters are thinking along the same lines. WilliamHill.com.au took a $2500 win bet at $7.50 and one punter at Crownbet got better odds with a $1500 bet at $8.

Apart from the action on Under The Louvre, there hasn’t been any significant moves in the Goodwood. Favourites don’t have a good record in the race and punters have been weary of that. There is plenty of value with some classy horses and the bookmakers are prepared to risk them at big prices.

One of the biggest bets of the day has come on the Chris Waller-trained Tsaritsa which looked ultra-impressive winning last start. It has had four starts for two wins and many punters believe it will rise through the grades this season.

One punter placed a $4000 bet at $3 with WilliamHill and we firmly suggest following the action. It looks a nice type in the making.

We were surprised to see a lack of action in the BRC Sprint at Doomben. The field contains plenty of punters’ favourites which includes the current favourite Artlee. The Todd Willan-trained gelding was unlucky in the BTC Cup and it has only firmed in from $2.90 into $2.80.

The speed should be fierce up front with Religify and Charmed Harmony which will allow Artlee to sit off the pace and strike late. It’s our bet of the day at $2.80 with Sportsbet.
