Betting tips and bookmaker bonuses for Day 2 of The Championships

Randwick races
DAY one of The Championships showed how great the Australian racing product is – the good news is, it doesn’t stop there.

This Saturday the $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes will showcase the best thoroughbreds in the country and, despite Winx not taking its place, the field is full of world-class runners.

The Group 1 Sydney Cup is also on the cards where Chris Waller holds the key in the betting. Who Shot Thebarman and Libran are dominating the market and both look like potential 2016 Melbourne Cup entrants.

Plenty of other good racing with the Australian Oaks and Queen Of The Turf which both present great betting fields.

Race 1 – TFE Fernhill 2YO Handicap (1600m)

Obscura has had two starts for one placing which came on debut at Kembla Grange. The John O’Shea-trained colt then ran fifth in the Baillieu behind Attention which should be a good form guide for this. It drops in weight, but the $3.50 price looks a touch short.

Prized Icon was desperately unlucky to not win last time out behind Attention. The James Cummings-trained colt has placed in all three starts on this track and it didn’t have any room to move at Rosehill in the Baillieu. Hugh Bowman jumps back in the saddle and the $2.80 looks spot on.

Peter and Paul Snowden line up Reinforced which was disappointing last time out. Its form prior featured a narrow win last Wyong and it looks a type which should improve with more racing. It has drawn well in barrier three and it gets in with a nice weight of 55.5kg. $3.70 with bookmakers.

Race 1 tip: Prized Icon to win ($2.80) at Luxbet.com.au

Race 2 – McGrath Estate Agents South Pacific Classic (1400m)

Santa Ana Lane was forced to go back from the wide draw in the Darby Munro last start and the improved draw should help here. The Lee and Anthony Freedman-trained gelding has plenty of potential having won three from four starts in Melbourne before coming to Sydney last start. Its only defeat in Victoria came behind Mahuta and the $7.50 looks like value in this.

Kimberley Star has always shown potential and it went close behind Lady Sniper in the Gosford Guineas last start. Its form prior included good runs behind Redzel and Speak Fondly which would both start favourite for this race. The current punters’ elect at $5.50.

Mawahibb comes over from Melbourne with one win under its belt and it has been well backed here. The Hawkes-trained colt is currently at $6 having placed in its last four from five and Damien Oliver gets the ride at a luxury weight of only 54kg. Looks a strong chance.

Race 2 tip: Santa Ana Lane to win ($7.50) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 3 – The Provincial Championships Final (1400m)

Hetty Heights comes into the final having won its last two starts. The Kim Waugh-trained mare won on a heavy track last start by 1.5 lengths and it looked to have more in hand at the line. It has competed well in two non-provincial races in Sydney and it has drawn perfectly for this. $4.80 looks a nice price in a big field.

Stablemate His Majesty has good form leading into the final, but it has been dealt a harsh blow in the barrier draw. The six-year-old grey has drawn barrier 18 which will likely force to back. Blake Shinn rides which is a help, but we’re expecting its current price of $5.50 to drift out this week.

Danish Twist has competed well in non-provincial races with placings behind Rockolicious and Figtree. The Kris Lees-trained mare has been running on well in its last two and dropping to 54kg with Oliver in the saddle only helps its chances. $8 looks like good each way value.

Race 3 tip: Hetty Heights to win ($4.80) at CrownBet.com.au

Race 4 – Ig Markets Percy Sykes Stakes (1200m)

Prompt Response has yet to win a race in two starts, but it ran second in the Ottawa Stakes on debut and it wasn’t far behind Calliope last start. The Gai Waterhouse-trained filly has been backed hard in the betting at $3 which suggests a good run is expected. Looks a strong chance to break its maiden status.

Waterhouse also lines up last start winner Thyme For Roses at $5.50. The Redoute’s Choice filly won the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes at Flemington last start by 2.75 lengths and it looms as a major winning hope again. Drawing barrier 11 isn’t ideal, but it should roll forward and give a nice kick in the straight.

Soviet Secret hasn’t had much luck to start its career. The two-year-old ran second on debut and again second up behind Twist Tops at Randwick. It was slow away from the barriers before flying home late and that bodes well for this. Punters have let it go this time around and the $13 is good each way value.

Race 5 – Arrowfield 3YO Sprint (1200m)

Japonisme brings the class to this field having won the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes last year. The Chris Waller-trained gelding finished hard in behind Flamberge last start and it looks about ready to win again. It is suitably weighted at 56.5kg and the $3.20 is where it will likely stay in the betting.

Petits Filous is a smart Victorian filly which has won five from six. The Ciaron Maher-trained filly was too slick over the 1100m last start, but the rise up in distance could test it against a much higher level of opposition. Its only other start against this quality came in the Moir Stakes where it ran 10th and the $4.40 is a touch too short for our liking.

Ghisoni was disappointing in the Coolmore last start, but its form prior was strong and punters shouldn’t drop it just yet. The John O’Shea-trained filly likes to go forward so the barrier of 14 isn’t ideal, but it’s at a value price of $13 after opening at $15 and it could be the surprise package in this.

Race 5 tip: Japonisme to win ($3.20) at WilliamHill.com.au

Race 6 – James Boag’s Australian Oaks (2400m)

Capella is a Kiwi filly which ran on well behind Single Gaze in the Vinery Stud last time out. The Danica Guy-trained three-year-old has won three times in New Zealand and after the victory of Tavago in the Derby, it looms as a strong chance in the Oaks. It opened at $7.50 and has drifted out to $8.

Jameka has drawn wide in barrier 16 which won’t help its chances, but class should go a long way here. The Ciaron Maher-trained filly finished second in the ATC Derby behind Tavago and shifting back to its own sex should make winning easier. It hasn’t won in four starts this campaign which is concerning, but consider for the win here.

Happy Hannah stepped up over more ground last start and it was extremely unlucky to not win the Vinery Stud. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained filly is making another step up in distance to 2400m and it looks ideal for the daughter of More Than Ready. Expect it to settle midfield and rattle home at $4.60.

Race 6 tip: Happy Hannah to win ($4.60) at Luxbet.com.au

Race 7 – Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m)

Libran has won three straight and it fell over the line in the Chairman’s Handicap last start. The Chris Waller-trained import will see out the 3200m and dropping right down in weight to 53kg makes it a legitimate winning chance. It can handle all track conditions, but after opening at $3.20 it has drifted out to $3.80. Punters will want $5 for this runner.

Who Shot Thebarman is another Waller-trained runner with better credentials to win a Sydney Cup. The seven-year-old tried hard behind Preferment in The BMW last start and having had five runs over this distance is a big plus. It looks ready to win its 10th race and punters share our confidence having bet it in from $4 to $3.50.

Grand Marshal has improved with every run this campaign and it worked home well behind Preferment last start. It hasn’t won in awhile which is concerning, but dropping down to 55kg is foreign territory for the six-year-old and James McDonald will get the best out of it. Chris Waller should be training the trifecta here.

Race 7 tip: Who Shot Thebarman to win ($3.50) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 8 – The Coolmore Legacy Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m)

Noble Protector finally found its best form last start when second behind Miss Rose De Lago at Moonee Valley. The Robert Smerdon-trained mare finished third in this race last year and the positive signs shown last start gives it some chance in this. $13 is a good price for a former top liner.

Risque couldn’t see out the 2000m last start and the drop back to the mile will help where it has won twice. The former Kiwi won the 1000 Guineas at Riccarton and it finished third behind Palentino in the Australian Guineas. Overlook its most recent effort and the $9 is a value price.

Azkadellia is on the back up after finishing third in the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap behind Winx. The Ciaron Maher-trained mare likes to get back and fly home which should suit here and it looks ready to win. Bookmakers opened it up at $3.50 and it has drifted out to $3.60, but that shouldn’t deter punters.

Race 8 tip: Azkadellia to win ($3.60) at CrownBet.com.au

Race 9 – Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m)

Preferment was an outstanding winner in The BMW and the only worry is the drop back in distance. The Chris Waller-trained horse has won three times over the 2000m and it surged late to win the Australian Cup over the same distance. It comes into this with plenty of fitness under its belt, but bookmakers are letting it drift out at $6 in the betting.

The United States has been the best backed runner at $4.20. The Robert Hickmott-trained horse was strong when winning the Ranvet and it has always been a punters’ favourite. The six-year-old import is a versatile type which could get its biggest career win here and there are plenty of confident punters around. The price is too short for our liking, but it remains a winning chance.

Lucia Valentina has had five starts second up for no wins or placings, but it’s too good to leave out. The Kris Lees-trained mare ran a tremendous fifth in the Hong Kong Cup and it spouted wings last start to run fourth in the Coolmore last start. Any rain would help its chances, but still consider at a nice price of $8.

Race 9 tip: Lucia Valentina to win ($8) at WilliamHill.com.au

WilliamHill.com.au

Race 10 – Sensis Sapphire Stakes (1200m)

Bounding is an eight-win mare which ran on well behind Griante in The Galaxy last start. The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained mare has finished out of the money only once in 10 starts at this distance and despite having to carry 58kg, it looks a top chance at $5.

Griante must be respected after winning the Group 1 Galaxy last start. David Brideoake is training very well at the moment and this five-year-old has won and placed at Randwick. It gets punished in the weights at 58kg, but it has carried that weight to win in Victoria. $8 with bookmakers.

Private Secretary stormed home to finish second last start and it will likely drop back from the wide draw again. The Gregory Hickman-trained mare has the ability to win at this level and the 54kg will give it every chance. Bookmakers currently have it at $18 which is crazy money.

Race 10 tip: Private Secretary to place ($5.50) at Bet365.com.au
