Ellerslie Race 4 – Megablast

Australian punters got a glimpse of Megablast when it ran second at Moonee Valley in June before running eighth at Flemington.

Both runs came on a good track which doesn’t suit the Nigel Tiley-trained six-year-old, but the conditions at Ellerslie this Saturday are ideal.

Megablast has had 13 starts on rain-affected ground for six wins and four placings and it loves running at Ellerslie. The son of Shinko King has won twice at Ellerslie and it also ran fourth in the Group 1 Auckland Cup on this track despite conditions not suiting.

It will have to carry 60kg in the sticky conditions, but there are no serious thoroughbreds in this race and it should take advantage at $2.50 with Topbetta.com.au.

Ellerslie Race 6 – The Shackler

The jumping career of The Shackler didn’t get off to a great start after running 25.5 lengths behind the winner in May, but it has rebounded in style with three effortless wins.

The 11-time winner from the Paul Nelson stables got off the mark over the hurdles when winning at Trentham by 20 lengths and it was clear then that it had found its groove over the jumps.

It then went to Te Aroha where it easily handled a quality field by 26 lengths and not one horse came close to beating it at any stage. The former winner over 1150m was flying over the 3100m trip and it makes its own luck out in front, which always helps in jumping races.

Its toughest test came last start on its home track at Hastings, but again it scored an easy 4.8-length win. That came in a $75,000 feature and it faces a similar task here, but due to the support for $4 chance Monarch Chimes, punters are getting a great price for The Shackler.

Take the $3.80 on offer at CrownBet and it will give you a great sight the entire trip.

New Plymouth Race 4 – Hello M’Lady

This will be Hello M’Lady’s toughest test to date, but there’s plenty to like about the four-year-old.

We spoke to trainer Vicki Prendergast earlier this week and the confidence was high with Hello M’Lady, which comes into this having won its last two starts with ease.

The daughter of Shocking scored by 2.8 lengths at Rotorua on June 28 and repeated the exact same winning margin again a month later. Those came against its own age group and there are some serious open handicap horses in this field, but it gets in well on the weights.

It carries only 54kg and considering how much it loves running in the mud, Hello M’Lady should handle conditions better than most in this field.

The $4.50 on offer at Ladbrokes.com.au is better than we expected and it will be hitting the line the hardest come Saturday.

New Plymouth Race 5 – Wooden Edge

Chris Wood lines up Wooden Edge which is a noted winter galloper.

The six-year-old has won six of its 12 starts on rain-affected ground and it’s looking to bounce back after a poor run at Rotorua last start.

It’s form prior to that run including consecutive wins which were full of class and it might have suffered from drawing along the rail last time out.

Drawing barrier 12 will ensure it gets to the outside part of the track and that could be the winning of the race. There are some talented runners inside of it, but Wooden Edge won its only start on this track and at this distance.

$4.20 at Bet365.com is the right price for a talented type.
