Benefit night legacy for Darren Jones

A benefit night for the family of jockey Darren Jones has raised around $120,000.

The 48-year-old died from injuries suffered in a race fall at Warialda in northern NSW on April 8, leaving behind his wife Sheridan and two sons.

Thursday’s fundraiser, hosted by the Tamworth Jockey Club, featured guest appearances by Sydney’s premier jockey Hugh Bowman and former champion jockey Malcolm Johnston.

A charity auction featured more than 100 lots including a set of Winx’s trademark blue and white silks signed by Bowman and the champion mare’s trainer Chris Waller.

Johnston donated a framed print of champion Kingston Town who he rode to 25 of his 30 wins.

The benefit was boosted by a $25,000 donation from the estate of well known breeder Denise Cobcroft who died in 2015.

Last month a trust established by Cobcroft shortly before her death donated $400,000 to the National Jockeys Trust.
