Bowerman will be representing the China Horse Club and Lindsay Park Racing at Bendigo this Sunday

BETTING on Sunday racing isn’t for everyone, but the spring performers are starting to get busy and you’ll often find a nice type running at Bendigo.

The Victorian club hosts great betting fields this Sunday with a massive 171 horses spread across 10 races.

The “nursery of champions” can be the starting point for many group race thoroughbreds and punters have already been eyeing up a few spring prospects this Sunday.

Race 1 – City Of Greater Bendigo Maiden (1400m)

Civil Guard has been close at its last two starts and it should get all favours from the inside barrier. The John Moloney-trained four-year-old finished second at Geelong behind Share The Faith and second again at Pakenham when running a neck behind Positively High. It has each way claims in a big field.

Mirebeau is from the Waterhouse/Bott stables and it showed some ability in the summer. The son of Al Maher ran fourth on debut at Newcastle before battling on well for sixth at Wyong in February. It has drawn wide in barrier 15 which should see it cross to the front where it should be competitive.

Race 2 – Jayco Maiden Plate (1300m)

Crystal Spirit has finished second in all three career starts and punters will likely follow it in again. The Ellerton/Zahra-trained colt has been beaten by some nice types including Onehundred Percent and Sanadaat at Sandown last Sunday. That form should stack up well for this and a forward effort is expected.

Zabelarina comes into this with a trial win under its belt, but its chances weren’t helped by the wide draw. The Robert Smerdon-trained filly scored by 1.5 lengths in a soft trial win and its breeding suggests it will hit the ground running. Follow any positive markets moves.

Race 3 – Beach Party Raceday Maiden (1100m)

Bowerman is a spring credential and it looks ready to break maiden grades. The Lindsay Park-trained three-year-old finished third on debut behind Khan in the Breeders Plate before being sent for a spell. It came back and finished an unlucky second at Sandown after getting held up in the straight. The well-bred son of Snitzel will have its fair share of supporters.

Yoshitomo Shima lines up Beyond The Dream, which put his stable on the map. The four-year-old mare ran second behind Kentucky Miss at Flemington on debut, but hasn’t been able to impress since. The daughter of Dream Ahead won’t have an easy task from out wide, but it will likely drop back in the run and produce late in the race.

Race 4 – TCL Maiden Plate (1100m)

Pat’s Girl in on debut for Team Hawkes and although it hasn’t publicly had a trial, it should be ready to produce. The four-year-old mare by Duporth has good breeding lines and the addition of Dwayne Dunn in the saddle suggests that they’re expecting a top effort on debut. Watch the betting moves.

Souffrant was a trials performer before running poorly in the Skyline Stakes under the tutelage of Peter Robl. Now with Darren Weir, punters should expect a better effort as he knows how to get horses ready for the races. The son of Sebring has plenty of upside and the break from racing during the winter might have helped.

Race 5 – Schweppes Australia Handicap (1100m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1137557_05]

Eastern Pegasus scored an easy 4.25-length win at Bendigo three starts back and has been close since. The George Osborne-trained four-year-old has been awfully close to winning its last two and having another run at Bendigo will help its chances. The pace will be on so consider as a winning chance.

Darren Weir lines up Lasayette which is dropping in grade for this fresh up target. The five-year-old scored a 3.25-length win in this grade last year before taking on harder opposition in rating 70 grade. It typically runs well fresh up and this looks a suitable race for it.

Race 6 – Catanach’s Jewellers Handicap (2400m)

Cheron Warrior took 12 races to get out of maiden grades, but it did it in fine style. The Peter Healey-trained gelding scored by six lengths at Moe and the rise up to the staying distance clearly did the trick. Based on that performance it has to be considered for the win again.

Baja Moon offers some each way value after facing a tough field last start. The six-year-old drops back in grade after running 11th at Geelong, but it was only 3.35 lengths behind the winner. Its starts prior included a couple of close up finishes and it might be sent out over the odds.

Race 7 – Mypunter R78 Handicap (1000m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1137557_07]

Barthelona has plenty of talent and its best performances come when fresh. The Michael Moroney-trained four-year-old has won two of its three starts first up and its only start on this track. It has competed in the likes of the Blue Sapphire and Inglis Dash, but it returned some ordinary runs in those. Much easier here and it could take advantage.

Labuan Star is another fresh up performer which has placed at this short-course distance. The Weir-trained son of Bel Esprit scored by 2.5 lengths at Pakenham last campaign before running second behind stablemate Stellar Collision at Moonee Valley. It has drawn well and it should get a soft trip.

Race 7 tip: Labuan Star to win at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 8 – Bendigo Skin Clinic Handicap (1300m)

Night’s Watch is on debut for Darren Weir after having four starts in New Zealand. The son of Redwood was, at one stage, the favourite for the New Zealand Derby following its debut win, but it wasn’t able to put everything together following that. It had no luck at Ellerslie behind Camino Rocoso, but at its best it would put lengths on this field. Betting should indicate its chances.

Kharnmosh scored by a length on debut before running second at Echuca in July. It then tried its hand at Flemington where it struggled in behind Hay Bale, but this is easier and it’s not without a chance. Drawing barrier 11 is tricky with Night’s Watch drawn on its inside.

Race 8 tip: Night’s Watch to win at Topbetta.com.au

Race 9 – Now You’re In The Game Handicap (1400m)

Quik Nu Chik scored a narrow win at Geelong last start and it could kick on with it now. The Lindsay Park-trained mare had been close at its first two starts, but put it all together last time out. It has drawn to receive all favours and it could go back-to-back.

Spicy Mac is a consistent type which has finished in the money in seven of its 11 starts. It’s having its first start at Bendigo which is a concern, but it handles all track conditions and it shouldn’t be far away from the action.

Race 9 tip: Quik Nu Chik to win at CrownBet.com.au

Race 10 – No Fuss Event Hire Handicap (1600m)

Antagonist rattled off three consecutive wins this campaign and it beat some nice types along the way. The Dan O’Sullivan-trained gelding scored all three wins by more than a length and it should shape up well in an even race.

Cannot Be Serios rises in grade after running second at Sandown last start, but it competed in the Silverbowl Final which is great form for this. The Freedman-trained runner is well-accustomed to racing against quality opposition and it should be tough to beat.

Race 10 tip: Cannot Be Serios to win at Ladbrokes.com.au
