Benalla Cup Day racing preview
It’s Benalla Cup Day in the northern Victoria, where a nine-race card will provide the perfect entree to a night of Group 1 racing at Moonee Valley. The track at Benalla is a Soft 5 at the time of writing, but with 5-15mm of rain forecasted from Friday lunchtime onwards, we may be experiencing some very damp conditions come Benalla Cup time. The first race of the day is set to jump at 12:10pm AEDT.
Mike Moroney and Daniel Stackhouse team up with a 4YO stallion who comes out of runs in the Sir Rupert Clarke and the Toorak, where he was simply outclassed. He is a genuine wet tracker, considering he has only missed the placings once in his career on damp going, and will appreciate the significant drop in grade. He maps to be near last throughout the early stages of the race, but he appears to have the superior turn of foot in this field. We’re more than happy to side with the Group 1 form Harlech brings to the race.

Despite drawing the carpark in the final race of the day, Zorro’s Dream looks to have a bit of class on his side. He is looking to break through for his first victory this campaign after a string of runner-up performances, which include chasing home the impressive Housay. From the widest barrier, Billy Egan will look to settle the gelding in the moving line and get going just before cornering. Here’s hoping the Mitch Freedman runner can round out the card nicely for favourite punters.

This 5YO gelding resumed in fine style in Echuca when breaking through for his maiden win at his 14th career start. The Kevin Corstens runner maps to settle towards the rear of the field and looks to have a nice turn of foot. He may prove hard to hold out at nice odds, especially if he can bring the Echuca form to this race.
