Benalla racing tips

We will be lucky to get through this nine-race card at Benalla, where a wet and windy day is forecasted. The track was rated a Soft 5 around 24 hours prior to the jump of the first race at 12:55pm AEST on Friday, but we expect a further downgrade before the opener. The rail is in the true position, as it was on the September 1 when we last raced here and the track played fairly.

This is one of three meetings scheduled in Victoria on Friday, so here’s hoping we can steer punters into a few winners and help build a bank for Moir Stakes Night at Moonee Valley.

Best BetRace 4 – Competitor Get the best odds

The wet ground will not worry this 4YO gelding who is yet to see a track better than a Soft 7. The Patrick Payne product was well backed last start when just missing at Tatura and remains at 1600m after dropping back to 1400m the start prior at Sale. He has settled midfield in all three career runs so far and maps to be one off the fence here. With Noel Callow on board, he should be able to break his maiden tag here. This looks a maiden with not much depth at all, so Competitor should live up to his name and get us on the board early at Benalla.

Next BestRace 8 – Antagoniser Get the best odds

Antagoniser comes back to country-level racing after placing in two of four runs in town and looks tough to beat in the penultimate race on the card. He’s been in the market at all four of those runs and was runner up to Jittery Jack three starts back at Flemington. He will look to settle midfield in the running line and rates highly with Michael Rodd on board. His only career win come on soft ground, while he has run a place in five out of seven races on rained-affected ground. Great value.

Best ValueRace 3 – Next Edition Get the best odds

Next Edition had a nightmare run upon resumption at Wangaratta and can only benefit from it. He is unknown on wet tracks but showed a bit of ability in his debut campaign. From barrier 11, Harry Coffey should be able to take up the running and may prove hard to catch at odds. This looks a nice value play in what appears to be a wide-open race.
