Belmont Sprint racing tips & value bets – Saturday, 30 May 2020

Velvet King horse racing news

Belmont plays host to West Australian metropolitan racing on Saturday, highlighted by the Group 3 Iron Jack Belmont Sprint over 1400m. The rail comes into 6m for the entire circumference after they raced with a 15m rail on Thursday. The track is currently rated a Soft 5 but is a chance to improve by race day.

A quality field of 15 will face the starter, racing for $158,400. Darren McAuliffe’s gelding The Velvet King is the favourite ahead of Angelic Ruler and Flirtini. Some 10 of the 15 runners faced off a fortnight ago in the Group 3 Roma Cup at Ascot, which will give punters a great form reference. The Velvet King looks to lead from stablemate Abdicator and the 8yo Material Man, which has drawn barrier 15.

Saturday racing tips for Belmont Spring 2020

Best Bet
The Velvet King @ $3.60

The Velvet King looks to have drawn all the favours here in barrier five. All of the form reads in his favour with the 4yo gelding having won four races at Belmont, five at the 1400m and three on a soft track. He finished second behind Vega Magic first up in the Roma Cup, beating the majority of his opposition despite being posted wide for the entire race. Mitch Pateman will send the horse forward from the cushy gate and make every post a winner. He looks a very strong win bet and can make it three from three at the Belmont 1400m course.

Next Best
Angelic Ruler @ $4.80

We see this race similarly to the market here with Angelic Ruler as our second elect. She jumped favourite in the Roma Cup last start and worked home well into fifth place, less than a length from the winner. On that occasion, she was stepping back from 1400m to 1200m, which is not ideal, but she gets back to her preferred trip in this. From gate three, she will settle midfield and look to weave a way through the field under Chris Parnham. She’s never missed the placings at Belmont from four starts, nor at 1400m from eight starts. If she gets clear room in the straight, she can win this.

Best Value
Mississippi Delta @ $10

The Wizard in the West, William Pike, jumps off Angelic Ruler to ride Perth Cup winner Mississippi Delta first up, which is an interesting point of note for us. Grant and Alana Williams have a strong hold on Western Australian racing, especially when combined with ‘Pikey’ in the cerise and white silks. She will be quietly ridden from barrier 11 and work home strongly over an unsuitable distance. The High Chaparral mare has won at 1400m in the past, however, and is striking at 50% when resuming, so it would not be surprising to see her figure in the finish. She has won on a rain-affected surface before, which further endorses her each-way prospects.
