Ballarat betting tips

With only three meetings left in the synthetic season, we head to Ballarat for what looks a tricky card with not many short-priced favourites. As spring approaches, meetings like this one at Ballarat could provide us with a few to keep an eye on during midweek racing – and perhaps even in some of the stronger races – throughout the next few months.

Free racing tips for Ballarat Synthetic

Race 1
Adventure Trip @ $3.50 Sportsbet

An interesting maiden opens the card at Ballarat where we see the former Kiwi galloper Clever Approach (no.1) resume for the Lindsey Smith stable. It will be the four-year-old stallion’s first start on the synthetic, which is always a big watch, especially off a 30-week spell and being down in trip. He will be the hardest one to beat for our top selection, Adventure Trip (no.9), who will look to overcome his defeat on debut when sent around as favourite two weeks ago at Pakenham.

Race 2
Emerald Crown @ $2.25 Sportsbet

This race seems set up perfectly for Emerald Crown (no.1) to break her maiden at start five. She was among the placegetters in her first-up run on soft going three weeks ago at Cranbourne. Expect her to settle a pair off the speed. With Johnny Allen on board, this seems one of the better bets on the card. Archie Alexander’s mare Tapping (no.4) will need the race to be run at a slow tempo to catch the favourite, but she will need a lot to go in her favour for that to happen.

Race 3
Baaqyah @ $3.60 Sportsbet

Race 3 sees several first starters who have been backed early. That is usually a good sign, especially for those who have trialled. Raazou (no.17) is only the fifth emergency, but there is a lot of interest in the colt. If he gets in, he will prove hard to beat. If he misses a start, then the resuming Baaqyah (no.12) for the Dabernig & Hayes stable should get the job done. She impressed in her first campaign when running second in consecutive races behind Hard Landing and Tagaloa, who are both nominated for the H.D.F McNeil Stakes on Saturday at Caulfield. Also keep a strong watch on first starters Portland Sky (no.9) and Ebb And Flow (no.6).

Race 4
Laudeylou @ $5 Sportsbet

An open market greets us with a $3.20 favourite in Sweet Sixteen (no.11) for the Snowden stable. She comes in off consecutive placings on the Pakenham and Ballarat synthetics to begin her career, but expect that price to drift. There are plenty of first starters to keep an eye on, especially the two from the Maher & Eustace stable in Namakwa (no.9) and Laudeylou (no.10). Of the raced brigade, Little Caleb (no.2) looks the likely leader despite drawing the carpet and could prove hard to catch, whilst Majestic Missile (no.3) and I’m Still Standing (no.16) both have claims. We are leaning toward Laudeylou, who will look to settle just off the speed from the rails.

Race 5
Encircle @ $5.50 Sportsbet

The opening leg of the quaddie features one of the smaller fields of the day, but by no means is it an easy race to find the winner. Have settled with the top weight, Encircle (no.1), who comes off a tough win and loves the synthetic with a career record of 5: 2-1-1. The slight concern is going up 2.5kg from the last start. At decent each-way odds, Foxy Azz (no.4) flew around Wangaratta in a recent trial and will look to lead this field around. Dangers include the Maher & Eustace-trained Incas (no.2), who goes up heavily in weights, and Polyxena (no.3), who was 2.6 lengths behind our top selection last start when running on.

Race 6
Balle D’or @ $4.50 Sportsbet

Race 6 sees track and distance specialist Nine Clouds (no.1) go around with a hefty 64kg, which he did last start when beaten two lengths by The Bont (no.5). The latter horse goes around again in this race at a nice each-way quote of $23, so he should be a popular pick for quaddies. However, we have settled on the Simon Marrish mare Balle D’or (no.3), who is drawn the rails and looks to get the economical run throughout the race with Dwayne Dunn retaining the ride. We’d still suggest going a bit wider than usual in the quaddie for the second leg.

Race 7
Dress @ $3.40 Sportsbet

This is another tricky race with a few handy midweek types going around. Last-start winner Dress (no.11) is one of those who is yet to miss a placing in both career starts on the Ballarat Synthetic. With an impressive three-length victory last start, we should expect to see this three-year-old filly in the finish again. Should also see Honorable Mention (no.1) and Hurricane Fighter (no.2) close up at the finish.

Race 8
Paris Gem @ $8.50 Sportsbet

The last is the hardest race on the card, and it looks like a wide quaddie leg. We have gone with Paris Gem (no.12), who gets in well at the weights despite her win last start. Sensitivity (no.3), You Ess Success (no.4), Garbo (no.5) and Pieropan (no.6) all have genuine claims in what is a closer that is near impossible to pick.
