An eight-race card greets punters for Sportsbet’s The Hotham race day, where the final race on the card sees a capacity field of 14 try to break their maiden tag and get a share of the $75,000 on offer. The track has come up a Heavy 9, so there will be plenty of tired horses after the 1200m feature event. The first race is set to jump at 1:30PM AEDT, with The Hotham rounding out the card at 5pm AEDT.
The Maher & Eustace team will have been impressed by this 3YO filly’s debut performance, where she was held up at a crucial time and could not get a decent look at the eventual winner until it was too late. The extra 300m looks to only benefit her, and she has shown she can handle rain-affected ground nicely. The maiden she comes off has rated quite highly, with two of those gallopers going on to score at their next start.

The Archie Alexander stable has been low-flying recently, and this 4YO gelding will be looking for back-to-back wins on his home track. He returned in fine form when travelling wide throughout but still going on to score by half a length on rain-affected ground. He will only take improvement out of that run and looks set to go on with the job here. From barrier 12, Declan Bates will need to go back on him and produce him early, as there looks to be plenty of early speed engaged in this race.

It is often hard to get excited by some of Bryce Stanaway’s gallopers, but this 6YO gelding has been building quite nicely with minor placings in each of his last two runs. In what looks an open sort of BM58, he can prove a knockout hope in the first leg of the quaddie. It would be a suitable day for Stanaway to find his first winner of the season, as that’s what The Hotham is all about.
