2020 Ballarat Cup betting preview

The Listed Ballarat Cup is the main event on a 10-race card in Victoria’s third-largest city on Saturday afternoon. A capacity field of 16 has been accepted for the $500,000 feature, with four emergencies on standby should they be required. The Archie Alexander-trained Kiwia will be looking to string together a hat-trick of Ballarat Cup victories, but he is well back in the market at $31.

Al Galayel hasn’t been seen since the Coongy Cup, where he pulled up lame after finishing midfield. We’re happy to rule a line through that effort, as prior form suggests he could be the one to beat at big odds in the Ballarat Cup. Ben Melham retains the ride and has a good association with his mount, having won on three occasions from five times on board. The seven-year-old gelding draws in the middle and will need a little bit of luck early to get cover in the moving line, but he should be too good for them if it comes together.

In a wide-open market, Junipal has opened as a joint $6.50 favourite after his win in the Group 3 Sandown Stakes. He was helped by the strong tempo the favourite had set in the running and may get a similar speed in this race. He’s off a seven-day backup and comes into this instead of The Gong at Kembla Grange, so it’s hard to let him go around without something on him.

The dynamic combination of Patrick Payne and Billy Egan will be looking to go one better this year after finishing within a whisker of the aforementioned Kiwia in the 2019 Ballarat Cup. Double You Tee was beaten a neck last time out in the Kyneton Cup and comes into this race with a similar form line as he did 12 months ago. He will settle towards the back of the field and will be suited by the predicted fast tempo, so we’ll be looking for him to make his run with our top two selections.
