Ballarat best bets & form for Wednesday, January 24

TWILIGHT racing is on at Ballarat this Wednesday and were keen to see how the meet will work at a country track.

Racing Victoria had some good success last week at Caulfield, but it will be a whole new test at Ballarat, but we’re not too concerned about that right now, we’re all about the tips.

Let’s take a look at which gallopers have caught our eye ahead of the 4.30pm AEDT kick off.

Race 1 – Maiden Plate (1400m)

Viv Said No looms as a great winning chance in the opening event. In an extremely small field the Helmet gelding has placed twice this preparation and is one of only two horses that has placed this campaign.

Race 1 tip: Viv Said No to win ($2.25 at Neds)

Race 2 – Maiden (1100m)

Hawkes first-starter Over And Above may not have trialed publicly coming into this one but we have to respect stable. The market has installed the runner as a short-priced favourite and we’re anticipating the son of All Too Hard will deliver the goods on debut.

Race 2 tip: Over And Above to win ($2.25 at Ladbrokes)

Race 3 – Maiden (1100m)

Okay Boss is at a huge price, and we’re happy to take it on. The horse debuted well at Geelong, and while the field is much larger here we believe it can surprise at odds. The short-priced favourite in this one was no more impressive than our elect so we are happy to recommend at a big price.

Race 3 tip: Okay Boss to win ($19 at Ladbrokes)

Race 4 – Maiden Plate (1400m)

After an encouraging debut at Stawell on January 5, Caribbean Wonder looks well placed to deliver a win. The inside draw will be beneficial and we believe it has the ability to breakthrough at the second time of asking.

Race 4 tip: Caribbean Wonder to win at Sportsbet

Race 5 – Benchmark 64 (1600m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1180235_05]

Tom Puss is an inconsistent runner that comes into this one as a last-start winner. In a smaller field of eight, the win at Yarra Valley by three and a half lengths brings us a lot of confidence and we think the place price is far too good to ignore.

Race 5 tip: Tom Puss to place ($2.70 at William Hill)

Race 6 – Benchmark 64 (1200m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1180235_06]

Lord Smedley is a runner we have a lot of time for and we think it can deliver a quality resuming run. The horse has placed first-up in the past, and more importantly has won at this grading before. The place bet looks a great option.

Race 6 tip: Lord Smedley to place ($4.20 at William Hill)

Race 7 – Benchmark 64 (2200m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1180235_07]

Tre Dieci is a brilliant runner that confronts a field with a lot more depth here. In its last five runs the horse has not finished outside the top-two, and was two parts of a length combined from adding a further two wins to its tally. The current odds around for Tre Dieci are borderline obscene based on its talents.

Race 7 tip: Tre Dieci to win ($10 at Crownbet)

Race 8 – Benchmark 70 (1400m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1180235_08]

Bossy Miss has been firming since the markets opened and could likely jump in the single figures. The horse has been racing well without winning and will relish both the drop back to country racing and the 3kg relief.

Race 8 tip: Bossy Miss to win ($14 at Sportsbet)
