Back-up no problem for Wine ‘N’ Dine

Wine `N’ Dine’s workload isn’t quite as heavy as it looks.

If he lines up at Randwick on Saturday, the six-year-old will be racing for the fourth week in a row.

But trainer Joe Pride gives the gelding an easy time between races and the only time he exerts himself is on race day.

Wine `N’ Dine is one of 15 entries taken on Monday for the Benchmark 92-race over 1600 metres, his most successful distance.

He will be backing up from a 1500m-win at Rosehill where he beat Final Decision and Avonaco.

“He will only have a saddle on once or twice in the week and he won’t do any hard work,” Pride said.

“He does some swimming and light exercise and just brings it on race day.

“The horse is a model of consistency. He likes the Randwick mile so all going well he can go round again.”

Five of Wine `N’ Dine’s nine wins have been at 1600m and he has been racing for more than six months without a spell in the paddock.

He began his racing life with Grahame Begg who makes his comeback with two runners at Geelong on Tuesday after 18 months away from training.

Pride has also entered Tender against Wine `N’ Dine with the mare no stranger to the quick back-up having had six starts since May 7.

Heading the entries is Black Jag who is looking for his first win since February at Caulfield with his trainer Chris Waller also nominating Springbok Flyer and McCreery.

Bold Circle and Timeless Prince are another two who may be asked to run twice within a week.

The David Payne-trained Bold Circle finished five lengths behind Wine `N’ Dine when 12th on Saturday while the Tony Newing-trained Timeless Prince finished fifth in the Listed Glasshouse Hcp (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast won by Flamboyer.

The Bjorn Baker-trained Sebrina is the second-highest rated horse in Saturday’s race and will be coming back from 2000 metres when she finished second as favourite at Rosehill on June 18.
