Awoke comes alive as new-season prospect

A couple of years ago trainer Chris Waller produced a filly called Winx at Rosehill to win a late-season two-year-old race.

At the corresponding meeting on Saturday, Awoke beat her stablemate Foxplay over the same distance to set up a tilt at stakes racing in the spring.

And while not putting either filly in the same class as seven-time Group One-winner Winx, Waller will give them their chance as early three-year-olds.

“They will have a short break but will stay in the stable,” Waller said.

“We will look at the races early in the spring in the Princess Series which we did with Winx.

“They have residual fitness going into the spring so it will just be case of keeping them happy.”

Winx won the Furious Stakes in September 2014 but found First Seal too good for her in both Tea Rose and Flight Stakes.

Waller had four of the eight runners in Saturday’s 2YO Handicap with Foxplay the easing $1.70 to $2.25 favourite and Awoke backed from $8 to $6.

The two drew away from the rest of the field with Awoke’s 4kg pull in the weights helping her to a short neck win.

Country-trained colt Cogliere ($15) was another four lengths third.
