Artie Dee Two opens account in town

Artie Dee Two has landed a betting plunge at Moonee Valley to keep his winning record intact.

The Darren Weir-trained two-year-old was backed from as much as $4 into $3.20 favouritism before taking out the Friends Of Epworth Handicap on Saturday.

Ridden by Brad Rawiller, Artie Dee Two scored a three-quarter length win from Tenappy Ladies ($4.40) with Trenchant ($20) two lengths away third.

Rawiller was impressed with the performance of Artie Dee Two, which backed up his success from Geelong on the synthetic surface on June 3.

“We didn’t get any favours, but I was happy to be outside the leaders and I just tried to have him in his rhythm,” Rawiller said.

“Before the turn I was pretty confident, but I was just a bit wary there might be something that may come from off my back.”

Rawiller suggested Artie Dee Two may now be given a break and brought back for some of the early three-year-old spring races.

“I galloped him Tuesday morning and his work was outstanding, but at the same time he wanted to charge a bit, but once he got to the front today his raceday manners were perfect,” Rawiller said.

“That’s a good sign going forward to 1400 metres and maybe further.”
