Archives makes up for unlucky Sydney debut

The powerful Godolphin stable is making spring carnival plans for Archives as the two-year-old gave former multiple Group One winner Helmet his first stakes win as a sire.

Archives ($3.80) atoned for an unlucky run when third at his only previous start in Sydney when he beat Jericho ($4.60) by a head in the Listed Hampden Stakes at Doomben on Saturday.

Godolphin spokesman Henry Plumptre said the stable had a high opinion of Archives who was from the same family as former smart galloper Safeguard.

“He is a big horse who will be improved. He got into trouble at his first run and deserved to win today,” Plumptre said.

“I think you will see a very good horse in the spring.”

Trainer John O’Shea said he would consider putting in a late nomination for the Group One JJ Atkins on June 11 but another option was Phoenix Stakes at Eagle Farm on June 4.

Helmet was a top two-year-old, winning the ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and Champagne Stakes as well as the Caulfield Guineas, all at Group One level.
