Apprentice has bleeding on the brain

Injured apprentice jockey Melanie Bolwell remains in the Gold Coast Hospital with bleeding on her brain after a three-horse fall at Warialda which claimed the life of fellow rider Darren Jones.

Leanne Henry escaped with general soreness and bruising in Saturday’s fall while Bolwell was transferred to the Gold Coast after being treated at the local hospital.

Racing NSW safety officer Maurice Logue said Bolwell’s boyfriend and family members were at her side.

“Her father Jason has advised Melanie has suffered bleeding on her brain which the doctors will monitor for 72 hours before deciding if surgery is required,” :Logue said in a statement.

“She also suffered general bruising, is able to open her eyes momentarily but is being kept sedated.”

The popular Tamworth-based Jones, 48, was the north-west NSW representative on the NSW Jockeys’ Association and had ridden close to 1000 winners.
