BRETT Cavanough-trained three-year-old Another Sin became the first ever debutante to win a Highway Handicap race after engaging in an epic battle alongside Lifesaver.

Another Sin, which jumped as the +220 favourite at Crownbet.com.au the main market elect Lifesaver (-111.11) separated from the field in the dying stages of the race and dueled it out, but ultimately it was the maiden which prevailed.

The pair did come together in the shadows of the post, which lead to a protest but that was quickly dismissed.

Prince Jacko was almost the afterthought of the race, but it plugged on well to claim third and return $3.90 at WilliamHill.com.au.

Another Sin was subject to a huge plunge in betting after opening at $8 during the week in most fixed odds markets, but following a flood of money on the gelding, it overtook the previously unbeaten Lifesaver over in on both the tote and fixed betting.

Trainer Brett Cavanough said the three-year-old’s connections were the reason why the horse experienced the massive market shift.

“They like a punt,” Cavanough said prior to the race.

“He might lose it when he gets in the mounting yard, but he’s pretty well-rounded. He’s jumped out a lot. I don’t think it’ll faze him.”

It was an interesting lead-in to the debut run for Cavanough, who took the horse to the country for a quiet trial before deciding to run the gelding in the Highway Handicap.

The trainer said he always had ambitions to run Another Sin in a big race, but only let Brad Clark and Andrew Gibbons in on the secret when he was confident the horse was good to go.

“Brad jumped him out on the inner track at Wagga and everyone was all smiles,” Cavanough explained.

“Andrew said he could could have put another four or five on them so we thought we’d have a crack.”
