Another city success for Jake Bayliss

In-form apprentice Jake Bayliss has extended his winning streak with the victory of Chiavari at Moonee Valley.

For the fifth Saturday in succession Bayliss has ridden at least one winner on a metropolitan track.

Saturday’s success on the $7 chance Chiavari came in the Silver Thomas Hanley over 1000m for former champion jumps jockey Nick Harnett.

Settling just off the speed, Chiavari scored by a length from Hotel Sierra ($12) with Bella Capri ($4.40) 1-1/4 lengths away third.

Bayliss said he was riding in the best form of his career and put that down to keeping out of trouble with suspensions and injuries.

“I’ve been working my backside off,” Bayliss said.

“I’ve had some really good support from Nick Harnett, Mr (Robbie) Laing, Mr (Mick) Kent and Mr (Mike) Moroney.

“These top trainers are looking for two or three kilos off their horses at this time of year and hopefully I can keep the ball rolling.”

Bayliss has taken bragging rights from his brother, fellow apprentice Regan, in recent weeks and who is currently sidelined with suspension.

“He’s copped a few suspensions and is doing it a bit hard after Mr (Peter) Moody received his suspension but he’s keeping his chin up,” Bayliss said.

“I speak to him every day and sometimes he catches a cab down to my place on his day off.

“He’s basically my best mate.”

Chiavari’s win helped ease the pain for Harnett after dislocating a finger on Saturday morning.

Harnett said Chiavari was racing in good form and was overdue to break her city maiden status.
