A field of 12 has been assembled to fight it out over the Flemington 2800m this Saturday for a spot in the 2020 Melbourne Cup. The track is currently rated a Soft 6, but we could see an upgrade on race morning. The rail goes out 2m for the entire circumference, so the track should play fairly. Adelaide Cup winner King Of Leogrance is the current favourite, ahead of Warrnambool Cup winner Too Close The Sun. Galleywood Hurdle winner Runaway looks to do exactly that and lead the field up.

We cannot see anything beating Danny O’Brien’s in-form stayer King Of Leogrance here. Drawn perfectly in barrier five, he should find a spot just off midfield under Damien Oliver and pull away. The 5yo by Camelot has had a nine-week spell since a dominant Adelaide Cup win and will be suited by Flemington, where he has won at in the past. The $2.50 is a great price in our opinion. Bring your truck, bring your trailer – this could be a galloping lesson!

Paul Preusker’s 4yo Dark Alley brings a similar profile to this race as his star stablemate Surprise Baby. The lightly raced gelding is coming off a great win at Geelong which came off a let-up since running fourth behind King Of Leogrance in the Adelaide Cup. Craig Williams will settle towards the rear from barrier six, most likely stalking the race favourite. Being by Lucas Cranach, he should lap up Flemington and finish the race strongly.
Too Close The Sun was superb when leading all the way to win the Warrnambool Cup 10 days ago. He has banged three in a row together now since coming over to Melbourne from Perth under the guidance of Lindsay Smith. We expect Declan Bates to box seat from barrier two and make sure it’s a solid staying test. It will be the son of Carlton House’s first attempt beyond 2400m, but his breeding suggests he will handle the trip. Whether or not he will be strong at the finish over the 2800m is our query.
