AFTER trying to plot a middle distance path for his talented mare Ensuing, trainer Andrew Noblet is planning on taking a backseat to his lightly-raced four-year-old heading into the future.

The precocious runner registered an auspicious maiden victory on debut in 2016 over 1400m and was moved up in distance in its subsequent runs. The horse failed to finish inside the first half of the field in its next three runs before going out for a spell.

Ensuring’s sixth career race will be on Thursday over 1300m at Warnambool. The gifted product of Street Sense will return a more well-rounded runner after gaining experience from confronting the varying distances and fields it has encountered thus far.

Noblet told HorseBetting.com.au he is going to let the galloper guide the team as to what its best distance and optimal class will be.

“I’m not sure what her ideal trip is, I reckon she’s more of a miler.” Noblet said.

“She just runs through her grades that horse. She has a 1300m on Thursday, she’ll probably go up to a 1400m next start, but we’ll see what happens after Thursday.”

The return run was a race across 1200m at Sale just two weeks ago, which saw Ensuing finish second in a smaller field, and the mare steps up again in distance on Thursday at Warrnambool in a benchmark 64 race.

The trainer said that despite the stronger form over the shorter distances, he believes Ensuing is a 1600m horse.

“We tried to get her over more ground as a three-year-old and that didn’t work. I reckon she’s more of a miler.”

The Warrnambool track is expected to improve on its soft rating heading into Thursday evening, and despite placing second last time upon resumption at Sale on a similar rated track, Noblet will not take any chances on running the mare on ground that does not suit.

The trainer believes Ensuing is well placed to win its second career start if the track gets its expected upgrade.

“I hope so,” Noblet said of Ensuing’s winning chances.

“It looks a nice race for her, providing the track improves in the next couple of days she’ll be going down there and she’ll run well.

“If she happens to win on Thursday we’ll be putting her through the grades.”

Ensuing is running in the Genr8 Grand Hcp Mile 18/3-Bm64 at Warnambool, Race 5 from 6.15 pm.
