Amexed turns back time to land rich Stayers prize

TRAINER Tony Gollan was due for a big day at Ipswich on Cup day, but he didn’t think he’d be winning with Amexed in the $100,000 Stayers Series Final.

Amexed had not won since winning the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate in May of 2014, but today it broke the long drought by coming up the inside of second place-getter All Clear ($7.50).

Gollan couldn’t provide a rational reasoning to the improved run by Amexed, but he did have thoughts about running it in the Ipswich Cup.

“Where do I start? There isn’t just one thing but rather 10 – sore feet, hitting himself, etc, etc. It must be a day for long-term losers to finally win,” Gollan said.

“But this is a quality horse but I was starting to despair about him. I entered him for the Ipswich Cup today but it was a bit soon for that.”

Gollan may now push towards either the Townsville Cup or the Grafton Cup on July 14.

“He would be well up to both races but we will see how he pulls up,” Gollan said.

Gollan has had an incredible reason to date and the win pushed him within a half-win of his career record of 79 wins.

Amexed also gave jockey Robbie Fradd his second win of the day after scoring aboard Londehero which hadn’t won in more than 800 days. Fradd used his track knowledge and came along the inside of runners to score the narrow victory.

“The horse was travelling but everyone else was going out wide so I just went along the fence,” Fradd said.

Amexed paid $13.40 with WilliamHill.com.au over the well-favoured All Clear and Artibai.
