A Twitter review of the weekend in racing

THE Hawkesbury standalone meeting on Saturday was a success for the club and the day produced some mixed results for punters.

The well-favoured runners were rolling in thick and fast to start the meeting. Great Glen was heavily-backed to open the Hawkesbury meeting and it narrowly got the job done. Felines, Lanciato and Wanna Get A What continued the early trend, but that’s where it stopped.

A string of upset results followed for the major races, which included outsider Shazee Lee in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas. The Scott Singleton-trained runner wasn’t supposed to win at odds of $67, but no-one told the horse.

Top bookmaker Sportsbet.com.au would have loved the result, hence its reaction on Twitter following the race.

Did the commentator call out the wrong name? No… Shazee Lee had upset the likes of Calanda and Spright to win the co-feature of the day and not everyone was over the moon with the result.

Fabrizio leads the way to Hawkesbury Cup win

Following a disappointing result in the Hawkesbury Guineas, punters unloaded on one runner in the Hawkesbury Cup and it wasn’t the winner.

European import Spectroscope was the best-backed runner in the field, but it never loomed as a winning chance. Meanwhile, Fabrizio did what many punters suspected and led all the way at odds of $9.70, but it was paying much less throughout the day.

Fabrizio opened as the $7 second favourite, but drifted significantly throughout the day as more market pressure was put on Spectroscope. Punters couldn’t catch a break, but there some winners showing their pleasure on Twitter.

Hot favourites dwindle at Caulfield

Punters looking to make a quick buck at Caulfield were sadly mistaken on Saturday as the hot favourites got rolled more than a Drum tobacco packet.

Doubt I’m Dreaming was supposed to get punters some easy money in the Thoroughbred Club Stakes, but the dream quickly turned to a nightmare when the star attraction finished only third behind Kobayashi.

The two-year-old copped plenty of criticism on Twitter, more so the punters which thought the juvenile having its second start was a moral.

Loco alright! Because the pain continued for punters later in the day when both Miss Vista and Fastnet Latina were beaten in their respective races.

Miss Vista – the flashy mare with distinctive facial markings, was unable to sustain a hot pace, but who could be angry at that face?

Fastnet Latina is an American-bred type which was unbeaten from four starts in Australia, but the soft track conditions tripped up the Melbourne Cup hopeful and punters were once again licking their wounds.

One punters blamed his fat fingers for mistakenly putting the wrong horse in his quaddie – whether or not he struck gold with Rhythm To Spare is anyone’s guess, but at least he saved some money on the beaten favourite.
