A Twitter review of the weekend in racing

THE rain threatened to derail Golden Slipper Day for punters, but aren’t we glad the meeting went ahead?

It was an amazing day of action at Rosehill which housed four group one races, including the $3.5 million Golden Slipper which stole the show.

Punters firmly decided that the unbeaten Queenslander Houtzen was the way to go, but many forgot about She Will Reign which dominated the early Golden Slipper markets.

The Gary Portelli-trained filly relished the wet conditions and turned the tables on Frolic after being beaten in the Reisling Stakes earlier this month.

Portelli was happy to win his first Golden Slipper before getting up close and personal with the winning trophy.

She Will Reign was the best looking filly on the track, but how about the strapper for Teaspoon! He easily won best dressed strapper for the big race.

We’re secretly glad Teaspoon didn’t win the Golden Slipper. We couldn’t imagine seeing that young lad jumping up and down in excitement…

The queen of the turf reigns supreme

Whilst She Will Reign was the princess of Rosehill on Saturday, there was only one queen of the turf.

Winx absolutely demolished its rivals in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes and it was great to see the Rosehill crowd cheering the champion mare home.

Will Winx ever suffer another defeat in Australia? It’s looking highly likely that the wonder mare will continued to win this preparation unless something freakish and relatively impossible happens.

Winx was a drifter in the market with some bookmakers. The Chris Waller-trained superstar drifted from $1.13 to $1.30 with some bookmakers.

Clearly some punters wanted to part with their money.

Russian Revolution the next star three-year-old

We find it hard to get overly excited about star three-year-old colts, because we know they will be heading off to stud in short time.

Mick Price has just confirmed that Flying Artie and Extreme Choice will be heading to the breeding barn after only a handful of starts as a three-year-old.

Russian Revolution will likely join them after this season, but for now punters should enjoy a talented youngster which grabbed its first group one victory in Saturday’s Group 1 Galaxy.

Big Duke gives Weir his first Sydney winner

It wasn’t the way Darren Weir would have hoped to train his first Sydney winner after Big Duke scored the opening race at Rosehill in the protest room.

The imported runner battled with Our Century for the entire straight, with Our Century getting the nose down on the line, but Craig Williams worked his magic in the protest room and Big Duke was awarded the victory.

Big Duke is starting to get a cult following after showing consistent form since arriving in Australia, but one punter wasn’t having a bar of it.

Darren Weir would later taste success at Flemington when Palentino turned its form around. The quality runner has been costly for punters this season, but it downed stablemate and the highly-fancied Tosen Stardom.

The believers were paid alright. $5 on offer at CrownBet.com.au for the high class galloper.
