A horse-by-horse betting guide to the 2016 Golden Slipper

Rosehill racing tips
WE are just days out from the $3.5 million Golden Slipper and now is the best time to secure your fixed odds prices for the two-year-old feature.

The 2016 Golden Slipper is the richest two-year-old race in the world and it always attracts an exciting and talented field – this year is no different.

We have the Blue Diamond winner, Extreme Choice, the Magic Millions winner, Capitalist, and a host of other talented thoroughbreds looking to score their biggest win to date.

The Victorians are swooping in and have the support of the punters, but punters know full-well that Victorian form hasn’t stacked up in previous years and there is some good value with the Sydneysiders.

We have divided our Golden Slipper picks into different categories which emcompasses most of the runners and we should be able to find our punters some good value for the Rosehill feature.

2016 Golden Slipper – the unbeaten brigade

1. Extreme Choice
Form: 111
Odds: $3.00 @ Crownbet.com.au

The Mick Price-trained Extreme Choice has been the punters elect since it won the 2016 Blue Diamond at Caulfield. The two-year-old colt is unbeaten in three starts and it will head forward after drawing barrier seven on Tuesday. It has the ability to sit on a hot pace and produce good times so it looks a tough horse to beat.

4. Kiss And Make Up
Form: 11
Odds: $9.00

The well-named Gai Waterhouse-trained colt strikes us as the horse you’d want for the future, but can it win the Golden Slipper? The More Than Ready colt has looked good in winning both career starts and it defeated once-Slipper favourite Capitalist by 2.3 lengths last start. It is another which will pile on the pressure up front and it has shows good fight in its races. Not the worst chance at each way odds.

5. Astern
Form: 11
Odds: $11

The classy Godolphin colt might have been a touch overlooked by punters this week and we think it’s over the odds at $11. The John O’Shea-trained runner didn’t receive any favours in drawing barrier 17, but it showed a bullish class about it last start and it only needs some luck in the running. James McDonald will need to produce a gem, but horses have raced three wide in the Slipper and won. Looks a definite place chance at $3.50.

11. Scarlet Rain
Form: 111
Odds: $26

Another Waterhouse-trained runner which has won well to date, but it will find this grade much tougher. Its wins have been quality, but we question the quality of opposition and it won’t have everything go its way from barrier 16. We couldn’t speak more highly of Tommy Berry’s riding skills in sprint races, but he will need to produce a career-best ride to get Scarlet Rain over the line here.

13. Yankee Rose
Form: 11X
Odds: $34

An All American colt which has beaten the likes of Good Standing and Telperion. It has drawn well in barrier three so that won’t be an issue and it hasn’t shown anything to suggest a good run isn’t on the cards. Being put out for a spell might have caused punters to miss this runner, but we have it firmly in our sights and we are getting a good price of $34. Leave out at your peril.

Plenty of quality with the unbeaten brigade and the winner has a great chance of coming out of this category. Extreme Choice looks to have excellent speed as a two-year-old, but we favour Kiss And Make Up to progress further in their respective careers.

We have eliminated Scarlet Rain from our winning and place hopes, but we are making a case for the rest, including Yankee Rose at $34 with CrownBet.com.au.

Golden Slipper best of the rest

2. Flying Artie
Form: 2X12
Odds: $5.00 @ Crownbet.com.au

The second of the Mick Price-trained runners and this race looks ideal for it. The son of Artie Schiller has been getting too far back in its races before flashing home late, and drawing barrier five should ensure it finds a better spot in the field. It came hard behind Extreme Choice in the Blue Diamond and if it holds that form it could round this field up in the final 50m. Looks right in the mix and is the current second favourite.

7. Capitalist
Form: 1112
Odds: $9.00

Was the Golden Slipper favourite for a long time before Extreme Choice won the Blue Diamond, but then its odds really blew out after it suffered its first race-day defeat last start. That run looked out of character and it has caused punters to question the strength of the Magic Millions. We’re prepared to forgive that run and the $9 doesn’t look too bad. A first four pick and the $2.90 for the place is value.

8. Good Standing
Form: 2X1
Odds: $13

Has looked professional in two runs to date, winning its last outing in fine style. It still has plenty to learn and racing greenly in the Slipper isn’t the way to win it, but Hugh Bowman is confident in its ability and the double-figure price looks tasty. James Cummings is looking to emulate the great Bart Cummings and we wouldn’t suggest backing against it.

6. Star Turn
Form: 31X25
Odds: $41

Has worked well throughout the week which has pleased its trainers. Has mixed form, but it has been around some of the best in this field and this colt is paying much more than they are. $41 is overs and value punters should back that price down later in the week.

9. Telperion
Form: 3X14
Odds: $26 @ Crownbet.com.au

Considered second best of the Godolphin barn yet the betting wouldn’t suggest that. Didn’t have the best of luck last start when it was back and wide on a slow pace. Drawn a touch wide in barrier 12, but an international rider is engaged and it could provide some value for multiples players.

15. Honesty Prevails
Form: 14
Odds: $41

Prepared to forgive its most recent effort as there were plenty of upsets on that Randwick surface. Gets in with a good weight and a nice barrier draw, so the $41 looks well over the odds. Good enough to win the Widden Stakes which is good enough to contend for the Slipper.
