Full form & tips for Sandown, Wednesday, January 3

WEDNESDAY’S meeting at Sandown is the first time the venue has hosted racing since we said goodbye to 2017 and we’re looking forward to what the eight races will bring.

The mid-week meet has just two maiden events, which means our job of tipping winners is made a lot easier.

Let’s get straight into it.

Race 1 – Maiden Plate (1300m)

El Phoenix looks well placed to breakthrough at the second time of asking. The Hayes, Hayes and Danbernig runner looked good on debut but unfortunately ran into a progressive type in the form of Another Flag. We think El Phoenix will be out of maiden company come Wednesday afternoon.

Race 1 tip: El Phoenix to win ($2.35 at Sportsbet)

Race 2 – Maiden Plate (1200m)

Confluence returns after a five month break hoping to snap a second placing sequence of four races. The horse only just missed out on securing its debut win at Flemington back in August in a benchmark 70 event, so a Sandown maiden should be well within its grasp.

Race 2 tip: Confluence to win ($3.40 at Neds)

Race 3 – Benchmark 64 (1500m)

Tagreeda only just missed out first-up as a short-priced favourite and looks well placed to follow up that run successfully on Wednesday. The horse has previously won second-up in the past and looks to be the clear-cut horse to beat.

Race 3 tip: Tagreeda to win ($4.20 at Ladbrokes)

Race 4 – Benchmark 64 (1400m)

Wetakemanhattan was a brilliant maiden winner in its first-ever race start and we believe it can make it two-from-two on Wednesday. The son of Manhattan Rain hammered the field by over two lengths to record that win under Jordan Childs, who again takes the ride on this promising gelding.

Race 4 tip: Wetakemanhattan to win ($5.50 at Sportsbet)

Race 5 – Benchmark 64 (1200m)

Fille De Charlie was a brilliant maiden winner two weeks ago at the Valley and the class of that win should hold it in great stead here. The horse defeated the highly touted Pamela Joy, which broke its maiden the very next start in a smart race at Cranbourne.

The form line looks good to make it two in a row for Fille De Charlie.

Race 5 tip: Fille De Charlie to win ($3.40 at Ladbrokes)

Race 6 – Benchmark 64 (2100m)

Marching On is a progressive horse that is seeking a hat-trick. After shaking the maiden tag the horse went straight into a benchmark 64 race and won comfortably. It gets a 2kg penalty following that win but there’s no reason to think the winning stops here.

Race 6 tip: Marching On to win ($4 at Crownbet)

Race 7 – Benchmark 64 (2100m)

Patriot Act is an outsider in the frame but we are expecting it to exceed the market’s expectations. The horse won at benchmark 58 level two starts back and last time out at the Valley it only missed out by less than a length and a half.

Patriot Act is well over the odds and we think it is more than capable of winning in this field.

Race 7 tip: Patriot Act to win ($16 at Neds)

Race 8 – Benchmark 64 (1200m)

Call Me Handsome only narrowly missed out last time at Bendigo as a short-priced favourite but it gets the perfect opportunity to bounce back here. The horse is back in grade on Wednesday and will be hard to hold out.

Race 8 tip: Call Me Handsome to win ($3 at Neds)
