Outstanding prospect Mihaul will head for a break with his unbeaten record intact.

The Iffraaj four-year-old closed his campaign in style with his fifth victory at the expense of a competitive line-up of Rating 85 gallopers in the Team Wealleans Handicap (1200m) at Te Rapa on Saturday.

“He did that with his ears pricked,” said Moira Murdoch, who prepares the gelding with her daughter Kieran.

“It was lovely to see him on a better track and on the rail, he hasn’t been there before and he was very professional.”

Murdoch said Mihaul would now enjoy a spell before they lift their sights next season. “He’ll definitely have a breather and the we’ll be getting him ready for Hastings in the spring.”

Mihaul won his first two starts for from Allan Sharrock’s stable, but persistent leg issues side-lined him for nearly two years and the Taranaki trainer suggested the Murdoch’s beach operation would be the ideal environment for the horse.

He successfully returned to racing at Matamata in March and struck again at Te Rapa last month before he continued his winning ways on Saturday. Mihaul settled three back on the fence and once into the clear he lengthened stride to put the issue beyond doubt with 250m to run.

“They went quite hard up front and that’s the best he’s felt – he’s top class,” Innes said. Akoya was in the firing line throughout and boxed in for second ahead of Mr Knowitall and Stradivarius.
