2017 Nathan Berry Medal markets, news and predictions

Nathan Berry Medal

SOME of the world’s best jockeys will be on show at Randwick during The Championships and they will be competing for the prestigious Nathan Berry Medal.

It’s named in honour of former jockey Nathan Berry who tragically lost his life in 2014 and will be awarded over 12 races throughout The Championships, which includes every group race and the Country and Provincial Championships.

Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys said it’s a fitting tribute for these jockeys to be riding in honour of the much-loved and much-respected rider.

“Nathan is affectionately remembered by all in racing and the Medal named after him is a fitting tribute to an extremely popular young jockey taken in the prime of his life,” V’landys said.

“This is a very prestigious award that recognises riding excellence during The Championships.”

Hugh Bowman is seeking his third Nathan Berry Medal win after claiming the medal last year by winning three consecutive races.

Bowman scored with Missrock, Japonisme and Sofia Rosa on day two of The Championships to score the win and bookmakers have rightfully installed him as the short favourite to win again.

The sentimental money has come for Nathan’s brother Tommy Berry, who has a solid book of rides on day one and is currently on the third line of betting at $5.50.

2017 Nathan Berry Medal tip

If day one of The Championships is anything to go by, we’re fancying either Kerrin McEvoy or Tommy Berry to take the lead.

McEvoy has a full book of rides which includes the well-favoured Mr Sneaky, Tulip and Russian Revolution which are all paying under $7.

Many of his other rides are at each way odds, but he’s definitely set for a big opening day of The Championships and he’s at good value of $5 at Sportsbet to win the medal overall.

Tommy Berry starts off slowly with only one ride from the first four races, but he starts to get warm with some stellar rides later in the card.

Berry rides three consecutive stars which are all paying under $5. He starts with Frolic in the Inglis Sires’ Produce which is coming off a second placing in the Golden Slipper and it should relish the conditions.

Inference runs next in the Derby and it has been around the mark over the staying distances all season. It should be one of Berry’s top rides for the day.

Punters will be relying on Chautauqua to score for Berry in the T.J. Smith Stakes and it should give Berry at least one point in the medal challenge.

Berry will likely shorten in the market as we’re expecting a big day one. Take the $5.50 on offer at Sportsbet.com.au.
