Most of the money this week has come for multiple group one winner Le Romain. The Kris Lees-trained runner finished second behind Winx in the George Ryder and Winx form is good form according to punters.

European import Spectroscope has attracted money at double figure odds since winning both Australian starts to date. The Godolphin runner was received a wide draw which stopped many punters in their tracks, but the addition of Joao Moreira in the saddle could see them return.

With the rain expected to fall throughout the week and on race day, punters are looking to find value with the noted wet trackers. Antonio Giuseppe and Happy Clapper have been supported at each way odds and more money is expected to come throughout the week.

2017 Doncaster Mile best bet

Spectroscope – $17.00 at Ladbrokes.com.au

Trainer: John O’Shea
Jockey: Joao Moreira
Form: 33×11
Barrier: 22

Spectroscope is a four-year-old European import which has adapted immediately to conditions in Australia.

The son of Medaglia D’oro scored its first Australian win at Rosehill where it defeated Extensible by a length before winning again in the Doncaster Prelude by a length.

It faces much harder opposition here, but it seemingly handles the wet conditions with ease and it glided over the ground when winning on a heavy track last start.

Many wet-track specialists struggled on that surface at Rosehill, which was described as “sticky”. It showed great ability to change speeds in the straight after being pocketed and carrying a light weight of 51kg will only help its cause.

The big worry is the barrier draw, but it showed last start that it can drop back and sprint home. We’re expecting champion jockey Joao Moreira to let the four-year-old find its feet after the jump and get a good position near the rear of the field.

It should be able to find a drag into the race, especially if they course wide in the straight and we think the bookmakers are offering generous odds.

2017 Doncaster Mile next best tip

Le Romain – $6.00 at Sportsbet.com.au

Trainer: Kris Lees
Jockey: Hugh Bowman
Form: 1×112
Barrier: 8

We tried to look elsewhere for our next best selection, but we kept coming back to Le Romain which has been the best-performed horse behind Winx this campaign.

The Kris Lees-trained gelding won the Group 1 Cantala Stakes at Flemington in the spring when beating race-rival Mccreery and it resumed with back-to-back wins this time in.

A narrow win in the Southern Cross Stakes was followed by a gritty win over Chautauqua in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes. That win showed just how tough it is to get past, especially at Randwick where it has won four from eight starts with three placings.

The four-year-old finished 7.3 lengths behind Winx in the George Ryder, but it still managed to beat the rest of the field home. There was plenty to like about that performance, despite the winning margin, and it has been given enough time to recover.

We’re expecting Hugh Bowman to positioned the gelding in a forward position before taking over around the turn. It might be prone to being left out in front too early, but Le Romain has fighting qualities and the Doncaster Mile looks a suitable target.

Doncaster Mile value tip

Redkirk Warrior – $13

Trainer: Hayes/Dabernig
Jockey: Regan Bayliss
Form: 21×1
Barrier: 15

There is plenty of value at the $13 for Redkirk Warrior which is coming off a stellar win in the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap.

The European-bred Hong Kong import has looked the goods since coming to Australia – winning two of its three starts. The six-year-old scored a solid win in the Sandown Stakes prior to the Newmarket and that form isn’t being respected by bookmakers.

There is a fair amount of unknown in the wet conditions, but it has an impressive action which should cope well with some give in the surface.

It’s a professional type which was good enough to run in the Hong Kong Derby and the rise in distance from 1200m to 1600m shouldn’t pose any problems.

$3.50 to place at Ladbrokes is worth taking.

Doncaster Mile each way tip

Mccreery – $9.50/$3.10 at CrownBet.com.au

Trainer: Chris Waller
Jockey: Kerrin McEvoy
Form: 162×15
Barrier: 17

Mccreery was disappointing in the George Ryder Stakes on a heavy track which should have suited, but it’s better running on a wet surface as opposed to a sticky surface.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding would prefer slow going where it has won three from five starts and its win in the Liverpool City Cup at Randwick was too good to overlook.

It drops right down in weight to 53kg which is ideal and the wide barrier draw won’t pose any problems. It has been specked at odds in the betting and we think it’s worth an each way bet.
