2017 Coolmore Legacy free tips, form and best value selections

Coolmore Legacy

THE Championships is into its second day and the Group 1 Coolmore Legacy Queen of the Turf is one of the feature races at Randwick.

A big field of 18 fillies and mares compete for the $1 million prize over 1600m and heading the field is current $4.80 favourite Silent Sedition.

The Victorian-based mare was a brilliant winner in the William Reid Stakes, but it will have stiff competition from the likes of First Seal, Heavens Above and three-year-old filly Foxplay.

There’s some great value in what is one of the better betting fields on day two of The Championships. We have form, value selections and our best tips for the Coolmore Legacy this Saturday at Randwick.

Silent Sedition opened at $4.50, but has drifted out a half-point to $5. There hasn’t been any significant market movement with any other runner to suggest its odds drifting out even further, so punters should expect a price around the $5 mark on race day.

Dixie Blossoms hasn’t had the best of luck this campaign and punters are backing it in again. The Ron Quinton-trained mare opened at $8 and it immediately shortened to $7.50. Bookmakers took it on again at $8 and the punters rallied back.

Drawing barrier 12 should help its chances on the heavy track and it could close as the second favourite with more support.

The only other well-backed runner has been Foxplay. The filly wasn’t able to produce its best last start, but it has attracted attention down in the weights at 54.5kg.

The Waller-trained runner has fluctuated in the market throughout the week, but is settling at $6.

Coolmore Legacy best bet – Silent Sedition

It’s no secret that punters make the majority of their money on consistent horses and Silent Sedition fits the bill.

The Andrew Noblet-trained four-year-old is one of the most underrated runners going around in Australia. It has had 16 starts for six wins and nine placings – that’s an incredible record and punters are cashing in.

So far this campaign it has won the Mannerism at Caulfield and the Group 1 William Reid Stakes at Moonee Valley. It’s also finished second in both the Bellmaine Stakes and the Group 1 Coolmore at Rosehill.

There are some concerns that the daughter of War Chant won’t handle the wet track, but it ran second on a slow track in the Coolmore and we think it won’t have a problem with the heavy surface at Randwick.

Craig Williams returns to the saddle which can only be seen as a positive and we can find no reason to start doubting the quality mare at this stage of its career.

Horses that win consistently will make punters plenty of money so jump on the value price of +400 at CrownBet.com.au.

Coolmore Legacy next best – Heavens Above

Heavens Above is one of those horses which only wins every so often, but we can’t overlook its Group 1 Coolmore win last start.

The Tim Martin-trained five-year-old flew home to beat Silent Sedition in a three-horse blanket finish and it should get conditions to suit again.

It has finished outside of the money in only one of five starts on rain-affected ground and it is twice a winner from six starts at Randwick.

Despite its form not reading well on paper, it had no luck in the Myer Classic in the spring when 10th and it was running on late in the Millie Fox Stakes when fresh up this campaign.

Jockey Tye Angland will get a good run from barrier five and he’ll likely sit just off the pace before producing Heavens Above at the top of the straight.

+750 at Bet365.com is a value price.

Coolmore Legacy value runner – Oregon’s Day

Punters could be quick to write off Oregon’s Day due to its long odds, but there was plenty of merit with its win last start.

The Mick Price-trained filly was a stylish winner of the Alexandra Stakes at Moonee Valley which followed an unfortunate performance for eighth in the Kewney Stakes.

The filly by Domesday was extremely slow out of the barriers, but it still managed to run under four lengths from the winner and its breeding suggests the wet track shouldn’t be an issue.

It has big race rider Damien Oliver in the saddle and it could finish over the top of them late at odds of $34 to win and +650 to place at Sportsbet.com.au.
