2016 Memsie Stakes likely to run on good track surface

CAULFIELD has received some rain throughout the week, but with a fine weather forecast for the rest of the week, track manager Jason Kerr predicts a good track on Saturday.

Caulfield had 24mm of rain throughout the week which caused the track to be graded as slow, but the track is improving according to Kerr.

“We’re a (soft) five at the moment but we are probably getting fairly close to a (good) four,” Kerr said.

“There are a few showers around at the moment and a couple coming through this afternoon (Thursday) so we’ve left it at a five at this stage.

“I’d think if we don’t get any of the showers, we’d end up a four. It’s reasonably clear on Friday, and Saturday is looking like a nice day.”

The Caulfield track will be used heavily this spring which has forced Kerr to move the rail out to six metres for the Memsie Stakes on Saturday.

“We’ve got six meetings in 29 days so we’ve got a busy little period coming up,” Kerr said.

“We’re stepping out (the rail) in three-metre increments. We will be nine (metres) for the meeting three weeks from Saturday and then we’re back in the true position for the Underwood and Rupert Clarke Stakes day.”

Contrarily, the racing surface at Rosehill for the Run To The Rose will be rated heavy after a deluge of rain throughout the week.

Rosehill track manager Chris Toogood rated it a heavy 9 on Thursday morning and the forecast is for more rain on Friday and Saturday.

“We had no luck,” Toogood said. “It’s a genuine heavy and unlikely to improve much if at all.

“It will be in that heavy range.

“It’s all systems go but we’ll be on a heavy track.”
